My inspiration for Everybody came from the brain initially. As I read this play for the first time, I started thinking about the nature of death. The characters all felt like panicked snippets of the mind racing, and I thought of the phrase “life flashing before your eyes” as I read. I researched neurons of the brain in the process of death and ended up grabbing onto the fluorescence shown in that imagery. Further research into immersive experiences such as Meow Wolf and discussions of structure vs organic brought about the design’s final form. A world that has others layered within, somewhat simulation-like and reminiscent of experiences one might have in immersive museums. Simultaneously, this is surrounded by the true theatre as the outside world gets a glimpse into the fishbowl of the human psyche.
