My inspiration for this design came from the innocence and age of watercolor in storybooks. We spend our childhood with the knowledge that the world is one way, with the memories of our stories in an idyllic way. However, as we grow up we’re faced with reality and with the horrors that many nursery rhymes hold. The watercolor twists in a new, dark way. Working with the team, I saw this connecting to Blood at the Root. This is a school full of kids who are told they can be racist, that it’s fine, and that nobody gets hurt by a few words. As the nooses appear, they’re forced to either realize that their idyllic views are twisted and dark, or to ignore reality and hide behind the pretty colors.
