Silk Screen Lamp

Classwork - 2021

Materials: 8mm habotai silk, silk dyes, water-based gutta resist, walnut, wood glue, spare bulb base, switch, fabri-tac

This silk lamp was made for a class project to explore some fine furniture techniques and electrics. The base is walnut that I planed, cut, and put together with half lap joints for strength. The pieces capped each other for the final construction, and a half inch piece of ply with a hold for the lamp socket was glued in the middle, adding extra structure. This was then stained and finished. The light socket was screwed in and completely wired by myself.

The screens were silk that was first stretched and the design was traced onto. I used gutta resist to outline after the trace. Silk dye was applied over time to get 4 of the same screen with custom mixed colors. These pieces were then steam set and glued in with fabri-tac.
