Aged Manuscript

Dr. Voynich and Her Children - 2022

Materials: Copy paper, coffee, artificial sinew, PVA glue, suede, heatnbond, chip board, wood color tint, acrylic paint

This book was created for Dr. Voynich and Her Children for Ohio University. It was meant to be an old manuscript that had gone through hundreds of years of additions. I started with coffee dyeing in a variety of techniques before folding 11x17 paper and creating signatures to be punched and sewn together. I used a modified kettle stitch to bind the stack together, and used artificial sinew for an aged detail. While this set up with many layers of PVA glue, I created the cover from a suede/heatnbond/tissue paper sandwich and chip board. I glued the cover on with PVA glue and added a strap. Finally, I aged the book with a mixture of spray tints and dipping gloved hands into a paint water mixture and adding some handling stains. For both testing purposes and further distressing, this book was hucked down two flights of stairs (a few times).
