The inspiration to create Carrie on stage was a journey. There is so much influence in the world for what Carrie can be between three movies and two large-scale musical interpretations. Removing myself from that and attempting to sink myself into the world of the novel was interesting. The thing that was noted immediately was that this isn’t a story about telekinesis. That’s secondary. This is a story about a girl coming of age, and facing the cruelty of the world around her. She just so happens to have powers that let her turn her horror story into one for the world. I played with a bit of an uncomfortable facade. The school became a shiny gym not only for the final scenes, but to show off the perfection and cleanliness. The adults that don’t want to fully invest in helping this girl. The grounding of this story was to pretend that everything would be just fine. Then I wanted to reflect the truth of Carrie, and broke up what I consider to be her home and put it in the air to show the state of her mind. That shifts and quakes the entire show, a gentle threat but not something to truly worry about. Until it is.
